Cyber Security NSW

Cyber Security NSW leads, implements and supports cyber security initiatives to achieve the vision of a cyber-secure NSW Government that can safeguard the confidentiality, integrity and availability of government systems, services and data for NSW communities.

To achieve this vision, Cyber Security NSW:

  • delivers products, services and best practice advice and guidance to NSW Government departments and agencies
  • coordinates whole-of-government cyber security strategies and initiatives
  • leads the NSW Government response to significant cyber incidents and cyber crises.

Comprising technical, people and process-focused initiatives, our integrated and risk-based approach helps ensure cyber resilience improvements are targeted and fit for purpose.

Stakeholders

In addition to working closely with NSW Government entities, Cyber Security NSW coordinates and collaborates with emergency management, law enforcement, academia, the private sector and cyber security entities within NSW and nationally.

These partnerships help ensure that the NSW Government is across the latest intelligence and industry best practice.

NSW Government agencies

Cyber Security NSW provides a wide range of products, services and best practice advice and guidance to NSW Government agencies. Agencies must inform Cyber Security NSW when a cyber security incident occurs.

All NSW Government agencies are required to submit annual reporting on their maturity against the mandatory requirements of the NSW Cyber Security Policy to Cyber Security NSW.

Local government

Cyber Security NSW provides products and best practice advice and guidance to local government. Councils should inform Cyber Security NSW when a cyber security incident occurs.

While councils are not mandated to comply with the NSW Cyber Security Policy, it is recommended they still follow its guidance.

ID Support NSW

Cyber Security NSW works closely with ID Support NSW to lead the state’s recovery from major cyber security incidents and data breaches. For example, following a major data breach, Cyber Security NSW will monitor the dark web for leaked personal information, conduct analysis, develop assessments and share intelligence with ID Support NSW.

ID Support NSW supports both NSW Government agencies when they have experienced a data breach and individual NSW customers if their government-issued identity credentials have been compromised.

Law enforcement

Cyber Security NSW has a close intelligence-sharing partnership with the NSW Police Force, collaborating on operations, incident response arrangements and other works.

Cyber Security NSW also receives and shares intelligence with law enforcement agencies across Australia.

Information and Privacy Commission NSW (IPC)

Cyber Security NSW works with the IPC to advance and promote information access and privacy rights across NSW Government entities. For example, the IPC and Cyber Security NSW are working on implementation of the Mandatory Notification of Data Breach Scheme, which will require agencies to notify affected individuals of eligible data breaches, including those arising from cyber security incidents.

TahSec

TahSec is the NSW Government’s capture-the-flag (CTF) cyber security team. TahSec competes in state, national and global CTF competitions. Cyber Security NSW and TahSec work together to run the annual NSW Government CTF, which is open to all Australian government staff.

Connections to other jurisdictions

Cyber Security NSW collaborates with many other Commonwealth, state and territory cyber security agencies, including the Australian Cyber Security Centre (ACSC).
