Having a highly capable, diverse and agile workforce is critical to achieving the Premier’s Priority of ‘Building a World Class Public Service’. The NSW Government Graduate Program is a structured employment and development program that aims to attract and retain fresh talent into the NSW Public Sector, build public sector capability and create a pipeline of future leaders.
Through three rotations across government agencies, the 18-month Program offers graduates incredibly diverse experiences, allowing them to build foundational government knowledge and shape their own career within NSW Government, no matter what degree they studied. Implemented and managed by the NSW Public Service Commission, the Program began as a pilot in 2016 with just 25 graduates. In 2020, the cohort has grown to almost 200 graduates, across two streams (Primary and Legal) and in roles in Sydney metro and the Hunter, New England and Central West regions.
While all roles are based in NSW, our program is popular with graduates from all over Australia and even beyond. The NSW Government Graduate Program was recently awarded Most Popular Government and Defence Employer in Australia for the third year running and maintained its #4 ranking in the Australian Financial Review/GradConnection Top 100 Graduate Employers 2020.
NSW Government graduates constantly tell us that making a difference in the community they serve is important to them, which is why the majority of our graduates have remained in the public sector since completing the program. At the end of 2019, 80 per cent of graduates who had successfully completed the program were still employed in the NSW public sector. Additionally, many of those graduates have progressed rapidly to a role at least two grades higher and are well on their way to becoming future leaders within NSW Government.
