BioNet’s State Vegetation Type Map
An open data exchange for all
The State Vegetation Type Map (SVTM) shows where different plant communities are found across NSW. It’s a useful tool for government, businesses, and communities to understand native vegetation and make better decisions about land use and conservation. The map is powered by BioNet, which provides integrated data services that support open data sharing and innovation. The SVTM is continually maintained to improve quality and alignment, with planning regulations enabling its use as an effective operational tool. The SVTM helps with biodiversity assessments, environmental trading, bushfire risk assessment and supports apps like Trees Near Me and Credits Near Me that provide practical aids for ecologists and landowners.
Achievements
The State Vegetation Type Map (SVTM) has made it easier for landholders, planners, and local communities to access reliable information about native plant communities across NSW. This improved access supports better land management and conservation decisions. Well-designed open data services make it easier to develop innovative applications. One example of its impact is the Trees Near Me NSW app, which uses SVTM data and has been downloaded 30,000 times since 2022. The app won Gold at the 2023 GOV Design Awards, highlighting its value to users.
The SVTM is part of the Integrated BioNet Vegetation Data (IBVD) program, which delivers 7 coordinated data products across 5 key areas. These products support major government initiatives like the NSW Biodiversity Offset Scheme and the NSW Koala Strategy, with an estimated annual economic benefit of $32 million.
Engagement
A wide range of stakeholders including government, businesses, environmental planners and the community were engaged throughout the consultation process to ensure that they would benefit from the State Vegetation Type Map.
