Using artificial intelligence (AI) to revolutionise road maintenance and operations

Asset AI® is a new digital tool helping asset maintenance teams in the NSW Government and local councils make our roads safer by using AI driven data to streamline road maintenance tasks.​

Cameras and sensors fixed to Transport for NSW (TfNSW) and council vehicles collect information about the roads. The insights help find problems on the roads faster, making them safer for drivers and pedestrians.​

Achievements

Asset AI® is an Australia first, whereby a technology solution captures and harmonises road asset information. Collecting data on our roads by using vehicles already driving the network provides significant time and cost savings for our road maintenance teams. Previously roads were scanned every 1-5 years to monitor the condition of our roads. Asset AI® can provide an update of road condition every 24 hours, with most council’s covering their entire network every 2 weeks, leading to efficiency gains and improved safety. ​

With broad interest in Asset AI® the project continues with a measured and steady approach to increasing participation from council and TfNSW teams.

Asset AI® is led by Transport for NSW (TfNSW) in collaboration with IPWEA (NSW & ACT) Roads and Transport Directorate and the City of Canterbury Bankstown.
