NSW Digital Photo Card
Supporting more than one million NSW customers who rely on the NSW Photo Card, including the elderly, customers with a disability and new migrants
Launched in April 2025, the NSW Digital Photo Card pilot provides citizens with an upgraded digital photo card, giving them a more secure way to prove their identity. The upgraded card allows customers to digitally share information needed for transactions without having to hand over their phone or reach for their wallet. The pilot is also helping make digital verification more inclusive, especially for customers without a driver licence.
The upgraded photo card is the first verifiable photo credential in Australia to be built to international standards, keeping information secure and making it harder for people to misuse credentials or steal information.
Learnings from the pilot will inform the wider rollout of the upgraded NSW Digital Photo card.
Achievements
The upgraded Digital Photo Card promotes accessibility and inclusion by ensuring digital access to government services for customers who don’t hold a driver licence. Successful testing of the upgraded credential also paves the way for the ongoing rollout of the NSW Digital ID and Wallet program, which could see a range of licences upgraded to the new credential standard, uplifting privacy, security and convenience for customers transacting in the digital age.
Engagement
The pilot program is a collaboration between the Department of Customer Service and Transport for NSW.
