Embracing digital innovation: Sydney Trains VR training for frontline excellence

Sydney Trains has introduced a virtual reality (VR) training program for 3,000 train drivers and guards to enhance their emergency response skills. This cutting-edge initiative marks a significant shift from traditional video learning, utilising VR to simulate real-life scenarios.

This empowers train drivers and guards to handle onboard emergencies with greater confidence and efficiency.

Achievements

To date, over 3,000 train crew members have completed the VR module. It is now embedded in the annual Continuation Training program, ensuring ongoing skill development across the workforce.

This program represents a significant investment in upskilling a large portion of NSW’s train operating staff. It addresses key challenges such as time and resource constraints, while delivering improvements in training consistency, cost-effectiveness, and safety outcomes.

The training has strengthened both emergency preparedness and overall operational readiness, contributing to a safer and more reliable passenger rail experience.

Engagement

Train crew were engaged in an immersive workshop to get hands-on experience with the technology, leading to development of the VR training. This ensures the solution can meet the needs of the crew in real life scenarios.

The VR module has been smoothly integrated into existing training schedules and has received consistently positive feedback from staff, who highlighted its engaging realism and effectiveness.
